Applying Communication Skills with Couples for Lasting Change (COU-591)
This course is in the Master of Arts in Counseling (MAC) program at Multnomah University (833-025-0005). The course focuses on how counselors can use coaching skills to help client couples apply new skills to achieve lasting results.
1. Course Description
This course provides a very practical approach to helping couples apply the communication skills they need to be successful. It is the actual behavior change of applying improved communications that results in a couple feeling more connected and closer to one another. As couples see the fruits of better communication, they will be able to resolve their differences more effectively and have a stronger marriage. The course will include a demonstration of the techniques and each person will have an opportunity to practice the skills.
2. Course Objectives
After successfully completing the course, students will:
1. Understand the basic communication process that is crucial to effective couple counseling.
2. Become familiar with an approach for helping couples effectively apply these skills.
3. Become familiar with a specific technique for enhancing mutual accountability for lasting change.
4. Be able to use these techniques in a real situation with another couple and receive feedback.
5. Understand the differences between counseling, marriage coaching and pure International Coaching Federation (ICF) coaching.
6. Understand the ICF competencies used in marriage coaching
7. Understand the basic communication process that is crucial to couple coaching and lasting change.
8. Become familiar with a marriage coaching process.
9. Become familiar with the critical coaching skills that lead to lasting change.
10. Be able to identify ICF coaching competencies in a couple coaching demonstration.
11. Be able to use couple coaching skills in a real coaching situation to facilitate agreed upon change and receive feedback.
